Amazon & Shopify listing images: the 7-image e-commerce playbook (with AI prompts)

Whether you sell on Amazon, a Shopify store or any e-commerce site, shoppers can't touch, weigh or test your product, so your images do all the selling. A product listing that converts uses 7 images, each answering one question: what it is, how big it is, what it does, why it's better, how it's used, why to trust it, and what's in the box. Add a short product video. On Amazon only the first image must be on pure white; Shopify and your own store have no rule. The rest can use colour, and the same set works on both.

Every example below was made for one sample product (a PEAK insulated bottle) with the prompt shown under it. Swap in your own product and facts. We make Poster Grammar, the tool linked on this page.

White or colour background (Amazon vs Shopify)?

Amazon only requires white for the main image, and Shopify and other e-commerce stores have no background rule at all. Images 2–7 can use colour on every platform, and a soft colour taken from the product (sage for an olive bottle, blush for a pink serum) helps the gallery look like one brand. It also stands out next to competitors' all-white galleries. Use white or off-white when you want the cleanest catalogue look. Use colour when the brand has one. Never change the product's own colour to match the background.

For every prompt, attach a clean photo of your real product (and a close-up of any detail that must stay exact, like a lid or a label).

Pure white, product fills about 85% of the frame

1. Main image: the compliant hero

4. "Us vs them" comparison

Has text · ChatGPT Image

Show the common problem next to your fix. Compare against a plain, unbranded product. Showing or naming a competitor's brand breaks Amazon's rules. Compare only differences people can see or that you can prove.

Prompt
Square 1:1 Amazon comparison infographic: a plain generic bottle vs the attached PEAK bottle.
PRODUCT LOCK: the right-hand bottle matches the attached PEAK bottle exactly. The left bottle is a plain unbranded brushed-steel bottle with a simple screw cap: no logo, no brand, no text.
LAYOUT: two equal vertical panels. Left light grey #E9E9E6 titled "THE BASICS"; right soft sage #DDE3D3 titled "THE PEAK EXPERIENCE". Headline across the top 12%. Thin olive banner across the bottom 8%.

Lifestyle: the bottle on a desk by a window
Clean lifestyle, no text (works on Amazon and your own store)

5. Lifestyle in action

Photo only · Nano Banana

Your buyer, in the place they'd use it: a kitchen, the gym, a desk. The product stays the sharpest thing in the frame. If you want a headline on it, make the photo first, then add the text in a second step or with ChatGPT Image.

Prompt
Square 1:1 lifestyle photograph. The attached PEAK bottle stands on a light oak desk beside the edge of an open laptop, a folded grey knit sweater and a small notebook, next to a window with soft daylight.
PRODUCT LOCK: the attached bottle exactly (matte olive body, black flip-top lid with carry loop, PEAK logo facing the camera). It is the sharpest thing in the frame.
FRAMING: bottle in the right third, about 60% of the height; camera at desk height, slightly above; background softly out of focus with green leaves outside the window.
LIGHT AS SEEN: daylight from the left, a soft highlight down the bottle's left edge, a gentle shadow to the right on the desk. Natural, neutral colour, no orange cast.
DO NOT ADD: text, people, extra bottles, other logos, water splashes or condensation.
OUTPUT: 2000 x 2000 px, sRGB.
Trust and specification cards: material, finish, care, warranty
Four spec cards, facts only

6. Trust, safety and specs

Has text · ChatGPT Image

Material, care, warranty and real certifications, as clean cards. Leave out customer reviews and star ratings, and never show a certificate or badge you don't actually hold. Amazon removes listings for misleading claims.

LAYOUT: bottle large in the centre-left; on the right, four equal specification cards stacked vertically, each with a minimal line icon; headline and one support line across the top.

What's in the box: bottle, box, card and brush in a flat lay
Top-down flat lay on sage paper

7. What's in the box

Photo only · Nano Banana

On Amazon and on your Shopify product page: a top-down flat lay of the box and everything inside it, squared up with equal gaps. It shows value and sets honest expectations. Only show what really ships.

Prompt
Square 1:1 top-down product photograph, camera looking straight down.
PRODUCT LOCK: the attached PEAK bottle exactly: matte olive body, black flip-top lid with carry loop, PEAK mountain logo.
ARRANGEMENT (knolling: everything squared to the frame, equal gaps):
centre-left, the bottle lying flat, lid on, logo up; right, its closed kraft-brown retail box with a small PEAK logo; below, a small folded instruction card and a slim cleaning brush laid parallel.
Only these items. No extra props.
SURFACE: smooth matte sage-green paper #DDE3D3, evenly bright across the frame (white version: pure white).
LIGHT AS SEEN: soft even brightness, a short gentle shadow to the lower right of each item, no hot spots, no reflections on the matte body.
DO NOT ADD: text, badges or hands.
OUTPUT: 2000 x 2000 px, sRGB.
(Include the card and brush only if your product ships with them.)

The product video

Amazon recommends a video next to your images, and on Shopify a short clip in the product media gallery does the same job. It plays in the gallery on mobile, often with the sound off. A short, captioned demo does more than a long brand film.

SpecWhat to use
File.mp4 or .mov
Size1920 × 1080 (16:9) recommended, at least 1280 × 720
Length30–90 seconds works best (longer is allowed)
SoundBurn in captions or text: many people watch muted
Not allowedPrices, discounts, customer reviews, star ratings, website links, contact details
Who can uploadUsually brand owners with Brand Registry, in the image gallery

A 45-second shot list

  1. 0–3 s: the product, clean and moving slowly. The brand is visible.
  2. 3–10 s: the everyday problem, then the product solving it.
  3. 10–25 s: 2–3 feature close-ups, one caption each (the same features as image 3).
  4. 25–32 s: scale: in hand or next to a familiar object.
  5. 32–40 s: unboxing: what's in the box.
  6. 40–45 s: end card: product and name. No price, no URL.

Your listing images double as storyboard frames: images 3, 5 and 7 map to shots 3, 2 and 5.

Technical cheat sheet

Let Apples make the whole set for Amazon or Shopify

Questions

Does every Amazon listing image need a white background?

No. Only the main image must be on pure white (RGB 255, 255, 255) with the product filling about 85% of the frame. Images 2–7 can use colour backgrounds, scenes and infographics. A soft brand colour taken from the product often stands out in a gallery of white images.

How many images should an Amazon listing have?

Amazon needs one main image and recommends at least six more plus a video. Most categories allow up to 9 images and show the first 7, so plan 7 that each answer one question.

Can I make Amazon listing images with AI?

Yes, as long as the product shown is your real product. Attach a photo and tell the model to keep its shape, logo, colours and printed text. Use only facts you can prove. Never invent reviews, ratings or certificates.

Which AI model is best for Amazon listing images?

In our tests, Nano Banana makes the most realistic product photos but often spoils any text, while ChatGPT Image handles headlines, labels and infographics reliably. Use Nano Banana for images with no text and ChatGPT Image for images with text. Full comparison.

What are the Amazon product video requirements?

An .mp4 or .mov file, ideally 1920 × 1080, at least 1280 × 720, about 30–90 seconds. No prices, promotions, reviews, ratings, links or contact details. Uploading to the gallery usually needs Brand Registry.

What size should Amazon listing images be?

At least 1,000 px on the longest side so zoom works. 1,600 px or more is recommended, and 2000 × 2000 px square is a safe standard. JPEG or PNG in sRGB, under 10 MB.
